Samwoh Conferred Asean Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award 2022
Singapore, 9 December 2022 – Samwoh was awarded the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award 2022 at the 40th ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations’ Conference held on 7 December 2022 in Cambodia.
This marks the second time Samwoh has received this prestigious award with the first in 2015 for the Samwoh Eco-Green Building – the first building in the region constructed using up to 100% of recycled concrete aggregates.
The Award recognises outstanding engineering achievements that demonstrates exceptional technical expertise and meaningfully contribute to engineering progress and quality of life across ASEAN, specifically the use of plastic waste to construct durable asphalt pavements.
Samwoh Innovation Centre and Singapore Polytechnic conducted a joint lab study since 2019 to evaluate the use of recycled plastic in asphalt. The main objectives of the study were to evaluate the mechanical properties, environment leaching behaviour, and life cycle cost of plastic asphalt. The pilot project demonstrated that plastic asphalt could contribute to environmental sustainability, increase road performance, reduce maintenance costs and carbon emissions. A field trial is being conducted to validate the performance of the plastic asphalt under actual traffic and weather conditions. This is supported by Land Transport Authority and National Environment Agency.
Mr Eric Soh, CEO of Samwoh, said, “We are greatly encouraged in our sustainability commitment and efforts by the Award. It is the second time that Samwoh has been recognised with the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations. The recognition spurs us to continue our push for sustainable construction through innovation and commitment to sustainability.”
Earlier this week, Samwoh opened its new HQ, Samwoh Smart Hub, which is Singapore’s first positive energy building (industrial), hailed as an exemplary sustainability model in the city. The building is also home to the pioneering Samwoh Innovation Centre – the largest R&D centre in Singapore’s construction industry – where the Company’s innovative recycled construction materials are developed and tested. The Samwoh research and innovation team has successfully developed several first-of-its-kind sustainable products such as low carbon asphalt pavements, Eco-Green concrete, wastewater treatment technology and the latest presently on trial, processed plastic waste to produce asphalt.
