Samwoh Wins 2023 ASEAN Energy Award

Singapore, 25 August 2023 – Samwoh Corporation Pte Ltd, a leading integrated engineering and construction company, received the Energy-Efficient Building award for Samwoh Smart Hub at the 2023 ASEAN Energy Awards on Friday, 25 August 2023. Samwoh was honoured at the gala dinner for its industry-leading efforts in the development of its 15,600m2 positive energy building – the first in Singapore. It comprises four blocks of mixed-use spaces for asphalt production, storage, offices, training, and a fully air-conditioned dormitory for up to 480 workers.

Samwoh Smart Hub, a revolutionary positive energy industrial building, stands tall as a testament to Samwoh’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. The hub was officially opened by Mr Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, on 6 December 2022. Since its inauguration, the company has opened its doors to over 1,000 visitors, including government representatives, industry partners, and students, embodying Samwoh’s mission to educate and foster industry growth.

With close to five decades of contributions to Singapore’s infrastructure development, Samwoh has consistently driven transformative initiatives. The company’s pioneering efforts include introducing trapezoidal grooving on runways at Changi Airport, commissioning of the regional’s first building to be constructed using up to 100% recycled concrete aggregates, implementing artificial intelligence video analytics for enhanced site safety, and working with Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, the National Environment Agency, and Singapore Polytechnic to trial the use of plastic waste to pave roads.

Adorned with around 2,600 solar panels, which can power about 300 HDB four-room flats every month, the Hub has achieved an impressive energy surplus of approximately 25%. It is also home to Samwoh’s asphalt production plant, boasting 15% higher energy efficiency than conventional plants and contributing to an annual carbon abatement of 1,220 tonnes – equivalent to removing 265 cars from the roads each year.

Located in the burgeoning Sungei Kadut Eco-District, the Hub aims to set a new standard in collaborative and people-centric workspaces. It houses the pioneering Samwoh Innovation Centre, Singapore’s largest research and development facilities for the construction industry. This is where Samwoh’s innovative and sustainable construction materials are conceived, tested, and refined. The Centre is also the birthplace of several first-of-its-kind sustainable products such as low-carbon asphalt pavements and Eco-Green concrete and is currently trialling the use of processed plastic waste to produce asphalt.
